I had the pleasure of photographing an engagement session at Black’s Beach in La Jolla/San Diego. From the breathtaking cliffs and the winding Goat Trail to the long trek down the steps leading to the sand, every part of this location made for an incredible backdrop. It was a perfect day—clear skies, soft ocean breezes, and golden sunlight that made everything glow just right.
My couple for this session was a bit shy at first. In fact, they were worried about how they would look in photos, something I hear all the time as a photographer. I’d say about 85% of the couples I work with tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera or that they’re not “photogenic.” But here’s the truth—I don’t expect my couples to know how to pose or act for the camera. That’s my job!
I always reassure my couples that we won’t be doing long, stiff poses. Instead, I keep them moving, interacting, and simply being themselves. I talk to them the entire time, guiding them and making sure they feel comfortable. What I’m really looking for are those small, fleeting moments—the fraction of a second when they’re laughing, holding each other naturally, or simply lost in the moment together. Those are the real, authentic moments that make the best photographs.
It usually takes about five minutes for the initial nerves to wear off, and after that, we’re just a group of friends having fun and capturing some incredible memories. By the end of nearly every engagement session I’ve done, the couple tells me how much fun they had—and that’s one of my favorite things to hear.
Being a photographer is more than just taking great pictures; it’s about making people feel at ease, helping them enjoy the experience, and bringing out their true selves. When that happens, the photos turn out beautifully every time.
So if you're engaged and worried about how you'll look in front of the camera—don't be! Let’s book a session, have some fun, and create some stunning images together.
