10 Tips for an Amazing Engagement Session

After photographing hundreds of couples over the past 15 years, I’ve learned what makes an engagement session not just beautiful, but also fun, relaxed, and meaningful. Whether you’re feeling excited, nervous, or a little of both, here are my top 10 tips to help you make the most of your session!

1. Start with the Right Location – What’s Your Vibe?

The best engagement sessions feel true to you, so let’s start with what kind of setting feels right. Do you love the beach, open fields, an urban city vibe, or a cozy at-home session? Think about what fits your personality—somewhere that feels comfortable, special, or just plain beautiful!

2. Timing is Everything – Let’s Chase the Best Light

Once we have a location, we’ll pick the perfect time of day. The best light happens during golden hour—that dreamy, soft light right after sunrise or before sunset. If we’re shooting somewhere shaded or indoors, mid-morning can also work great!

3. What to Wear – Keep it Comfortable & True to You

Wear something that makes you feel good, confident, and comfortable! I always recommend bringing two outfits—one dressy, one casual. Light, neutral, or earthy tones photograph beautifully, and avoiding loud patterns keeps the focus on you. Most importantly, choose outfits that let you move freely and feel like yourself.

4. Hair & Makeup – Consider a Trial Run

If you’re planning on having professional makeup for your wedding, consider booking your trial on the same day as your engagement session. It’s a great way to see how it looks on camera, and you’ll feel extra polished for your photos!

5. Bring Your Pet – Yes, Please! 🐶🐾

If you have a dog (or another furry friend), bring them along! Pets make photos more personal, and we’ll capture some sweet moments with them before they go relax while we finish the session.

6. Have Your Session Filmed – A Beautiful Extra Option 🎥

Want to add something extra? We can film your engagement session and create a video to go alongside your photos—a fun way to capture movement, laughter, and those sweet little moments in between.

7. Be Ready to Go with the Flow

The best engagement sessions happen when couples let loose, have fun, and trust the process. There’s no pressure to “pose” perfectly—I’ll guide you the entire time and keep you moving so it feels natural and relaxed. The best moments are often the ones that happen in between!

8. There Are No Bad Ideas – Let’s Get Creative!

If you have a fun idea—let’s do it! Whether it’s popping champagne, running through the waves, bringing your favorite pizza, or dancing in the middle of the street, this session is about YOU.

9. Bring an Open Mind & A Good Mood

Sessions are meant to be fun and stress-free. If you’re open to trying new things, laughing at little moments, and just enjoying time together, the photos will reflect that. The more you lean into the experience, the more genuine and joyful your images will be.

10. Trust Me – I’ve Got You!

Feeling nervous? You are NOT alone! Almost every couple tells me they’re awkward in front of the camera—but I promise, you won’t feel that way for long. I’ll guide you the entire time, giving direction that feels natural and fun, so you’ll never be left wondering what to do.

Final Thoughts – Let’s Make It Amazing!

Your engagement session should be an experience, not just a photoshoot. It’s about capturing your connection, celebrating this season, and having a blast in the process. Bring your personality, embrace the moment, and I’ll take care of the rest!

If you have any questions or ideas, let me know—I can’t wait to capture this for you!
